Finally, the neighbor opened the garage door just enough for Luka to see him sneaking out the back and closing it behind him. The bear immediately surged into the garage, roaring loudly.

Inside the garage, Luka saw a bear cub lying on the floor, looking unwell and breathing heavily. It dawned on him that the large black bear must be the cub’s mother. But how had the cub ended up in his neighbor’s garage? Luka watched as his neighbor opened a window to speak with him. The neighbor explained that he had found the bear cub about an hour earlier while hiking in the woods. Assuming it was abandoned, he had brought it home to take it to the vet.

The neighbor had thought it was the best course of action to bring the cub home, believing it wouldn’t survive in the wild. Perhaps the mother bear had sensed that too, which might explain her repeated visits to Luka’s house in search of help. However, only a professional could provide the necessary assistance. The neighbor informed Luka that the vet was on the way. They needed to address the situation with the mother bear. Using his tranquilizer gun, the neighbor aimed at the mother bear. Luka watched as the bear struggled briefly but eventually succumbed to the tranquilizer and fell asleep on the ground.

A few minutes later, the vet arrived and took both the mother bear and the cub. The mother would be transported to a temporary holding facility, while the cub would remain nearby for treatment. Once the cub was healthy, both bears would be released back into the wild. Over a week later, the vet called the neighbor and asked if he and Luka would like to witness the bears’ release. The neighbor agreed, and he and Luka met the vet and the team at an open clearing in the middle of the woods.

As soon as they were released, the two bears rushed towards each other, playfully rolling and cuddling in the grass. As they wandered off into the woods, Luka couldn’t help but smile when the mother bear paused to look back and gave a friendly wave. Luka and his family occasionally spot the mother and cub and are pleased to see them thriving and happy. Unlike before, the mother no longer climbs onto their deck.
